A snow cone is a unique and fun food item that is made of compacted shaved ice. The ice is usually flavored with brightly colored sugary syrup. Snow cones are very popular in North America during the Spring and Summer and are often offered at stadiums, festivals, carnivals, church functions, coliseums and even out of ice cream vans. The ice used to make a snow cone is created by hand or with a specialized, ice-crushing machine.

Samuel Bert created the first ever snow cone, at the Texas State Fair in 1919. He then created the first ever snow cone machine in 1920 and the idea took off from there. They are viewed as a variation of a shaved ice dessert and are generally served in paper cones or Styrofoam cups. Similar desserts include Italian ice, a slushie, a slurpee, snow cream, etc. Specifically, snow cones are often confused with Italian ice. However, snow cones are generally flavored after production, at the point of sale. Italian ice is flavored as the ice is made.
Ernest Hansen of New Orleans, Louisiana, created the first block-style ice shaving machine in 1934. This new snow cone machine resulted in smoother ice flakes, which allowed for a better retention of flavoring liquid. Also his wife Mary created many new and unique flavors of fresh syrups to add to his finely shaved ice.
A very similar version of the snow cone began in Asia. From 1885 through 1894, several thousand Japanese immigrants traveled to the Hawaiian islands for work. They brought a shaved ice dessert made in a similar method to North American snow cones with them. These Hawaiian shaved ice cones are known for their extremely fine, powdery consistency. Additionally, tropical fruit flavored liquids are usually added to the ice. Sometimes a layer of vanilla ice cream is also added into the ice. Lastly, in Puerto Rico there is also a unique variation of the snow cone. It is called piragua. Piragua is made in pyramid shapes, instead of the rounded ball shape common in North American snow cones. Nonetheless, all variations of the snow cone are delicious and enjoying one is a great way to endure hot weather.
