Many people are shocked by the over-the-top homes of rich and famous musicians, but it is easy to forget that these Rockstars often come from obscurity and can spend their quickly-accumulated wealth on whatever they wish. What better way to invest your windfall than by acquiring a fabulous home?
Rockstar homes often hold inner glimpses to the personality of the musician. This aspect usually gets overlooked when people behold the bowling alleys or helicopter pads that are in many of these homes. Rather than focus on the home itself, however, it is better to focus on what the home says about the musician.
A good example of a rockstar home that really contains the personality of the owner was Jerry Garcia’s house in Marin County, CA. This home contained tasteful art, subdued and comfortable furniture, and was set up with comfort, and not opulence, in mind. The most sly glimpse into the mind of Garcia, however comes with the self-sustaining home that possesses a well, propane generator and water treatment system. Garcia, evidently, went “green” far before his time.
On the other end of the rockstar home spectrum, Paul McCartney’s luxurious Beverly Hills home features an indoor movie room, a closet the size of a small apartment, and formally landscaped outdoor features. Obviously, Sir Paul enjoys his amenities and comforts. Another of the more expensive homes of those in music belongs to Madonna. While she owns enough homes to begin her own real-estate company, her residence in New York features an entire hair salon, a wine cellar and a luggage closet. Yes, that is correct; a closet specifically for luggage.
Dave Grohl, frontman of the Foo Fighters, lives with his family in Encino, CA. His home is certainly comfortable by any standards, but reflects a touch of common-sense living and is centered around family use and comfort, and not the standard rockstar homes image. In fact, when the Foo Fighters recorded their hit record “Wasting Light”, it was recorded in a modest garage in this Encino home.
